Since the Wilderness Act passed in 1964, Congress has designated 111 million acres of federal wild lands as official wilderness, less than five percent of the total U.S. land base. Excluding Alaskan wilderness, just 2% of the lower 48 states are set aside with this protective distinction.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore contains fifty square miles of wilderness landscape.

Designated wilderness areas receive the government's highest level of land protection and make up the National Wilderness Preservation System. This system is monitored and regulated by the: National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and the Bureau of Land Management.
